From Farmgate to Cup: Why Transparency Matters in Your Coffee Bag
Share
Our last post explored how processing (washed, natural, honey) shapes the flavours in your cup -> How Coffee Processing Shapes Flavour. But, before a cherry is ever picked or processed, the foundation for great coffee and a just supply chain is laid at the farmgate.
Here’s what transparency looks like in practice and why it matters.
It Starts with the Producer
Most coffee around the world is grown by smallholder farmers. They live modestly, have families, and are part of a community. Literally no one is more essential to coffee than the producer. Yet most coffee on the market lacks information about where the beans come from and who grew them.
We work with small independent farmers and co-ops who are paid above Fair Trade prices.
That means:
- Real people: You’ll see names like Clementino Ramirez or Maria Caceres on our site.
- Real impact: Higher prices mean farmers can invest in their land, pick riper cherries (better flavour!), and support their families and communities.
When you know the producer by name it adds meaning and value to the coffee, you’re building a connection to real people.
Transparency And Quality + Flavour
Flavour is born at the farm but it doesn't happen automatically. A farmer who is paid fairly and consistently can afford to:
- Pick only ripe cherries (instead of stripping the whole branch to maximize volume)
- Invest in proper drying equipment (reducing defects like mould or fermentation issues)
- Maintain their land for the long term (healthy soil produces better coffee year after year)
When farmers are squeezed on price often the first things to suffer are the very practices that lead to great flavour. Transparency doesn't guarantee a delicious cup but it helps remove the economic pressure that ruins it.
